Wednesday Hodgepodge

Thanks to Joyce for hosting the Hodgepodge

1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's English...here's the list for 2013- fiscal cliff, kick the can down the road, double down, job creators/creation, passion/passionate, yolo (acronym for you only live once), spoiler alert, bucket list, trending, superfood, boneless wings, and guru

Which of these words would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Go here to read more about how the words were chosen.

I am not a big fan of 'spoiler alert.'  It is overused...

2. When was the last time you rode a train? Where did you go?

When I was in Europe in the fall.  I took the train from Switzerland to Germany.  It was a beautiful trip.

3. Bagels-yay or nay? Favorite 'flavor'? Favorite topping?

I like bacon and egg on a bagel.

4. 'Tis the season of awards shows....if you could star in a movie already made, which one would you choose?

South Pacific - only if it is shot on location and I do not have to sing.

5. The move towards single gender classroom has been making the news in recent months...what say you? Do you think kids perform better if separated by gender and are taught differently or is that discrimination? If you're a parent is this something you'd support in regard to your own children?

Honestly, one has to learn to work with the other gender, people of other races as well as religious preferences.  It is better that they learn the skill in school than when they leave it to go into the workforce.  I am not a big believer in school segregation.

6. What's your favorite thing about staying in a hotel?

I am a hospitality professor.  I love studying the operational patterns of hotel employees.  I also like watching how guests interact with the facility.  Heather hates staying at a hotel with me because she has to deal with the critique after we leave.

P.S. Tomorrow I am posting about hotel taxes and where they go on the blog.  Come back and check it out.

7. Do you have a 'word' for 2013? What's the story behind your choice?

Fulfillment.   It is the same word I use every year.  I try to live my life so that I work to achieve goals and objectives.  I live to grow and develop so that I may make a positive contribution to everyone around me.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

There has been a lot of chat among the professors this week about student cheating.  If a student downloads questions from a test bank and uses them to study; are they really cheating?  For me, if the professor is using a test bank, they have to expect that the student can download the questions in this day and age.
