1. In the USA this coming Sunday millions will be watching as the Baltimore Ravens take on the San Francisco 49's in the Superbowl. What was the last event you attended that could be described as super?
My class was held on Monday night a Wild Dunes Resort. Three of the sales team took the students through two case studies of how they choose and evaluate conference business. It was a super evening indeed.
2. Share something you're a fan of these days?
I am a fan of sleep. On a more serious note, with my schedule lately, I am even more of a fan of my wife. She is getting extra kid duty while I am work these atrocious hours.
3. How do you feel about wings? In case anyone is confused, I'm talking the edible appetizer kind. What's your preferred seasoning on a wing-hot, mild, teryiaki, sweet and sour, other? Do you make your own or is there a favorite place you like to go for wings?
I am a fan of wings though I like dry rubs better. I don't like getting all saucy and dirty out in public...
4. As long as we're talking sports today...have you followed the Lance Armstrong story? Did you watch his interview with Oprah and if so what was your reaction to his confession and subsequent remarks?
No, no and don't care. No one died because of his actions. Some other cheater people made less money than he did cheating. He is not a nice guy...that is hardly news. He has not been a nice guy for his entire career if you have even been remotely paying attention. He, in a lot of ways, is the embodiment of corporate America. I guess that is the saddest part of this commentary - that he is not unique but rather one more cog in the machine.
5. What's a question you hate to be asked?
What are you thinking? If you need to ask, you probably do not want to know.
6. The coaches in this Sunday's big game happen to be real life brothers. Jim Harbaugh coaches the 49er's and his older brother John Harbaugh coaches the Baltimore Ravens. Were you and your sibling(s) competitive? In what way? Are you still? If you're an only child how did you handle competition growing up?
I wish I could be competitive with my sister - it would mean she was alive. We had five years between us and were totally different personalities. We were always in different life stages - only starting to share some commonalities when she passed on. So there was no reason really to be competitive.
7. What's your favorite game involving a ball and when did you last play?
I do like baseball and it was a long time ago when I last played.
Last night, the good people at Wild Dunes Resort were kind enough to host my class (seriously, who would not want to go to a class here). I got out there a little early to take some photographs. Click below to link up...
Thanks to Les for hosting the Tuesday Coffee Chat. This week's theme is:
"What makes you lose track of time? "
A professor by the name of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi developed the theory of flow in 1975. Flow theory explains the sensation people feel when they complete absorbed into the activity in which they are engaged. In other words, this is what happens when we lose track of time. He theorized and has provided thousands of pieces of evidence to support this assertion that flow occurs when one engages in an activity where their skill set is matched by a challenge (figure 1).
Figure 1 - Taken from http://austega.com/gifted/16-gifted/articles/24-flow-and-mihaly-csikszentmihalyi.html
By engaging in an activity where our skills are put to the test, we become engrossed into it as it requires all of our concentration to achieve the goals of the task at hand (figure 2). This is why those in flow lose a sense of time. They become one with the task at hand.

Sea
Living in Charleston is great for us. We live only a 1/2 mile from the inter-coastal waterway and about 45 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. This gives us such different perspectives...
For instance, we have the bridges...
Or views of the harbor and industrial areas...
Or looking out over the oceans...
Not forgetting to mention the beaches...
The sea constantly enters our lives in this city and we live so much the better for it.
7. A police officer - I would work in San Francisco like all those 70s cop shows.
6. A construction worker - A job where you can be a macho, macho man
5. Perhaps I just wanted to be these guys...(though never the leather guy - even as a kid I knew that was not a place I wanted to go).
Now for my serious list...these are what I really told my mom what I wanted to be.
4. An Ambassador - two words I learned early in life - diplomatic immunity.
3. A deputy minister - All of the power, none of the face time. You get to stay when politicians get voted out. It is a sweet job. Even as a kid, I dreamed of being a back room guy.
2. A spy...I mean seriously - how cool would that be?
1. A gigolo of course...I mean look what it does for David Lee Roth...
Here are FOUR QUESTIONS that everyone can answer and then you have the option to add a fifth question of your own for those who are visiting your blog to answer in the comment section, along with commenting on the four standard questions you answered! Grab the badge for your post if you like:
Our Questions:
1. On a long road trip do you prefer to be the driver or a passenger? Or do you prefer to travel a different way all together?
2. Do you use a slow cooker? Favorite thing to make?
3. Which type of festival would you rather go to... Wine and Food, Music or Sports?
4. What is your favorite fallacy?
And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!
My Answers:
1. On a long road trip do you prefer to be the driver or a passenger? Or do you prefer to travel a different way all together?
I really like driving Interstates. Long, boring straight drives where I can use the cruise control for long periods is my ideal driving. Sounds crazy but there is something soothing to bopping down the highway and just being able to take everything in. In contrast, I hate big city driving with a passion.
2. Do you use a slow cooker? Favorite thing to make?
Chili, of course. Can you make anything else in one?
3. Which type of festival would you rather go to... Wine and Food, Music or Sports?
I would go to a sports event. I love watching live sports. Add to that the fact that I do not drink and that really loud music gives me a headache and it is an easy choice for me.
4. What is your favorite fallacy?
Bigger is better...or maybe that is my phallic-y.
And here is my 5th question
Without looking it up (because that would be cheating) define the word - paronomasia
Heather and I are on the road right now and we're blogging on the iPad, so we don't have all the bells and whistles... We'll be home later tonight and post the linky and our fifth questions...
1. On a long road trip do you prefer to be the driver or a passenger? Or do you prefer to travel a different way all together?
2. Do you use a slow cooker? Favorite thing to make?

Thanks to the Unknown Mami for hosting Sundays In My City.
Last week, my students were participating in a conference at the North Charleston Convention Center - Embassy Suites. In preparation, the GM of the property agreed to facilitate a pre-conference with my students. Added to the meeting, he also took them on a tour of the facility. Here is the photo evidence. A special thanks to Peter Steketee for being so gracious with his time. It provided an invaluable experience for my students. If you are coming to Charleston, check out the Embassy Suites Hotel.
Trying a new hop this week. I love the concept of my week in pictures. Thanks to Naila Moon for hosting...
January 20 - 26th, 2013
On Sunday and Monday, I was at the SCFEA conference with my students. They are a great group and I enjoy working with them immensely.
I love driving to work at this time of year. The sun is rising and my driving into downtown Charleston is as beautiful as one could ever ask for. Charleston is one gorgeous city.
This week also featured the New Orleans Hornets officially announcing that they are changing the team name to the Pelicans. While some dislike the name, I have an affinity for the bird. They are awesome to watch.
Finally, this week featured a rivalry game between the College of Charleston and the Citadel. C of C won the game easily but rivalry games are always a lot of fun to watch.
Thanks to Mrs. 4444's for hosting Fragments and Joy for doing the same for Friendly Friday. Can't forget Hilary for her wonderful questions.
Friday Fragments.
I am speaking at another conference this weekend. Two in a row. Looking forward to seeing all of the North Carolina Festival Folks.
On a related note: You can view the presentation here.
I got to have a sort of lunch with Heather this week. Otherwise, we have been two ships passing in the night.
On a related note: There is only three more four more weeks of this schedule from places unmentionable left.
I am starting to use my blog for teaching my classes. I didn't know how it would work but it seems to be doing okay. If you really want to know what an RFP is click here.
On a related note: I have bonus points ready for any of my readers that submit the assignment at the end.
Working on my annual review today. It is not that often that one has a year as good as I had in 2012. On the student teaching evaluations there is a question, "The professor is an effective teacher." My scores, I averaged 4.9 out of 5.0.
On a related note: In my publishing I hit four top twenty journals with two in top five. That is a career for some people.
Friendship Friday - Blog Goals That is a good question. I do not really have blog goals. It is just really blog as a form of mental masterba- well-lets just call it self gratification that people have a strange desire to look upon now and then. For instance, I did officially go over 50,000 all time page views this week and have been averaging over 5,000 a month recently (knowing these numbers makes my quantoid heart proud). Sincerely, I thank everyone who stops by and I really do love comments.
Since this is about some shameless self promotion (and I am not above that), I invite everyone to participate in the hops that I host on a weekly basis. They are:
The Monday Quiz About Me Wordless Wednesday Thirsty for Comments Thursday
So drop on by and try one of these out.
P.S. Heather is looking for a couple of co-hosts for Thirsty for Thursday - so hop over to http://www.Actingbalanced.com if you are interested.
Friday Four Fill In Fun
This week’s statements:
1. Making sense is hard.
2. I get happy easily.
3. The number of emails in my inbox is insane and a little out of control.
4. Traveling to conferences makes me feel beat up for the next week but it is generally worth it.
Me, presenting at this conference last year. Ignore how big the belly looks.
Thanks to Brenda for hosting Pondering on Thursday. This week's topic is:
Balance
Let me start off by saying work-life balance is a myth. Every profession has times of ebbs and flows. There are seasons when one works heavy hours followed by normal periods combined with the occasional slow times. It is how one manages their times during each of these periods which is what really matters. During busy times are you ensuring maximum efficiency to try to minimize your hours. This is not the time to spend an hour chatting with your co-workers. In normal or light periods, it is great to do a little chit chat, it creates an environment of collegiality. Also, during light periods are you actually taking advantage of the slow time and taking time off. This is necessary to recharge the batteries. Those who think they are indispensable 24/7 are in the most cases, heading for burn out (then you are no good to anybody).
A semblance of balance comes from using strategy to allocate your time. It is about organization and efficiency. It is about prioritizing what is truly important to what is make-work or to what should be delegated. One needs to communicate with those around them, to ask for help when needed and know when to say, 'no' to items that are not central to the goals and objectives of the job. One needs to be open and willing to take the time to learn new technologies and techniques which may increase one's ability to be efficient. Having balance requires one to learn to 'pick their battles,' as conflict can take a great deal of time and energy. Finally and most importantly in a professional world - it is knowing when to go home.

This is a presentation I give annually to both the North Carolina Association of Festival and Events and the South Carolina Festival and Events. This year's presentation is a five year retrospective of the festival industry in the Carolina's (2008-2012).
Three future trends that arose from the presentation are:
How festivals address sponsorship is shifting. Sponsorship is moving from philanthropy to a more marketing orientation. Festival planners by large have yet to figure out how to accomplish this shift;
Variable pricing is going to become a hot button issue over the next few years. With many of the current revenue streams available to festivals flattening and costs still rising, ticket prices are going to become a primary source of income. As such, strategic pricing is going to be introduced into this realm on a more frequent basis;
Forecasting is currently a weakness across festival management. In order to be more accurate in predicting revenue and costs, there is a need to become more sophisticated in festival managers approach to forecasting.
1. The popular saying, 'All is fair in love and war' is originally credited to English writer John Lyly. Is he right?
No he isn't. I prefer to stay above the fray and play with honor and out of the brei.
P.S. - I will give you this one - brei is a suspension of finely divided tissue in an isotonic medium, used chiefly as a culture for certain viruses. In this case, I am hint that poor treatment is like a virus. If you start to treat others poorly, it spreads and makes things worse.
2. Are you a cereal eater? What's your favorite kind?
No, but as a kid I used to love Boo Berry and County Chocula...
3. A five year old in Pennsylvania was recently given a ten day school suspension for talking with a friend about shooting one another with a Hello Kitty Bubble gun (the gun blows bubbles). She did not have the gun with her at school.
5. January 23rd is National Handwriting Day, billed as a day to reacquaint yourself with a pen and pencil. Do you like your handwriting? Do you prefer to print or write in cursive? This date was chosen because its the birth date of John Hancock. What's the last thing you signed your name to?
I do like hand writing though I tend to do a mixture of cursive and printing. I signed my name yesterday to a series of forms at work.
6. Speaking of John Hancock...ever been to Philadelphia? Do you have any desire to visit the city of Brotherly Love?
I have been to Philadelphia a couple of time. It is a nice city.
7. Share something funny you've heard a child say.
One time when I was still working at parks and recreation one of the little girls comes up to me after a soccer practice and asks me, "Wayne are you older?"
Thinking this was a rather strange question, I looked at her mom who was standing beside her for a clue and she shook her head that she had no idea where this line of questioning was going either.
So I naturally ask, "Yes, I am older than you but why do you want to know?"
She replied, "Cause mommy said, if you were older, she wouldn't mind playing with you."
8. Insert your own random thought here.
I just learned how to embed PowerPoint presentations into my blog. I am already using them for my classes. Who would have thought that someone's blog would be used for educational purposes? Also, come back for Tourism and Technology Thursday and I will be putting up a presentation I made last weekend outlining the latest trends in Festival Management.
Thanks for Josie for hosting Two Shoes Tuesday. The theme this week is:
Heroes
One of the most interesting things about the movie business is how well the super hero movies are doing. It makes one think why they are doing so well I personally think that we, as a society, are longing for a true hero at the moment. Our political leaders are fallible. So many have told mis-truths and acted in manner unbecoming their offices that even those who are honorable and trustworthy are no longer so. Movie stars and athletes whom are often put onto a pedestal in our society are often fallen after one media scandal or another. Their PR facade destroyed by the element that made them to begin with. There have been so many tearful apologies that they have ceased to have an affect on society. I think the reason we like the superheroes movies is that they represent what so many feel is wrong about our society. The characters are people who may be flawed but when it matters are self-sacrificing. The characters are beyond reproach in that instance - they will always act in the best interest of humanity when it matters. Comic characters have heroism in their hearts and the willingness to 'do what it takes' to save the world is appealing in a world perceived as full of selfishness. Perhaps there is a lesson in this.
Les from Time Out for Mom holds a weekly Coffee Break. Her writing prompt this week is:
Have you ever won an Award?
In my career I have won several awards. If you want a listing of some of them - you can read the profile I wrote here. Awards are nice and I do enjoy them but I prefer to love my unsung work more. I like doing industry presentations where I get to share my knowledge with those who may put parts of it into practice. I thoroughly enjoy sitting in my office talking to students about their life choices and helping them sort out which path they should choose. I enjoy doing little things to make people's lives easier. I always said that I do not need to be the front man in a band. I can do it if it is needed - but I enjoy being behind the scenes more. I am perfectly happy letting other people enjoy the credit for successes because I know in my heart what I have done and I only need me to be a judge of my actions. I am flattered by awards but I am fulfilled by positive outcomes more.
Here are FOUR QUESTIONS that everyone can answer and then you have the option to add a fifth question of your own for those who are visiting your blog to answer in the comment section, along with commenting on the four standard questions you answered! Grab the badge for your post if you like:
Our Questions:
1. What was your favorite lunch this past week?
2. Do you shop online?
3. Do you get the "Winter Blues"?
4. Slippers, Socks, Shoes or Bare Feet?
And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!
My Answers:
Wayne is attending a conference this weekend Heather doesn't want to answer for him, so as soon as he has a minute he'll be back to post his answers...
My 5th question this week is ... What is your favorite hot beverage?
Really Heather? This is what you wanted me to ask for a fifth question? Hot beverages??? The real question is - could you tell Heather wrote the questions this week?
Thanks to Joy & Mrs. 4444's for hosting their hops.
Joy wanted us to do a bit of an autobiography this weekend. Since I am really not that interesting, here is my point form version.
I was born in Toronto in my mid 70s and grew up in East York.
As a kid I enjoyed playing baseball and going on camping trips to Killbear Provincial Park.
My first job was working in the same factory as my dad - errand boy, grass cutter and unfortunately bathroom cleaner.
On my 16th birthday I worked my first shift at Toronto Parks and Recreation. I would stay another nine years doing that.
I went to St. Patrick's Catholic High school. A fabulous school which has recently been ranked 660/691.
I completed my undergraduate studies at Brock University, my Masters at the University of Waterloo and my Doctorate at Wilfrid Laurier University.
As an undergrad I won the Gordon Taylor Award for undergraduate research, as a MA student I was the only person ever to receive multiple Statistics Canada Student Research Awards and as a PhD candidate I wonder the ISTTE Graduate Student Scholarship. In 2010, I was part of the research team that won the Charles R. Goeldner Article of Excellence Award.
Two of my post Masters jobs were working as the Tourism Development Coordinator for Chippewas of Nawash First Nations followed by holding the same position with the Walkerton Tourism Recovery Partnership.
My first journal publication was entitled The Role of Rural Shopping in Canadian Domestic
Travel Behaviour in the Journal of Vacation Marketing.
I married Heather in approximately 15 years ago.
We adopted Robyn in January of 2002. Liam was born in 2006 followed by Erik in 2010.
I taught for a year at the California University of PA before moving to Charleston in 2006.
I was awarded tenure last year.
Currently, I have published over 75 pieces (journal articles, book reviews & conference proceedings) in since 2004.
On a related note: Not only will I be supervising 37 students at the conference, I will also be presenting on Monday morning. It will be a busy weekend.
On a related related note: The research I am publishing may be viewed will be controversial. Lucky me.
The kids have been off yesterday and today, then have the weekend along with Monday off as well.
On a related note: Heather is thrilled that this will be a weekend where I am unavailable.
The teaching schedule is already starting to beat me up this semester. I have worked at least 14 hours everyday this week before going to a conference this weekend.
On a related note: Heather hasn't gone completely nuts yet. Although she is upstairs making random animals sounds at the moment.
I am sorry that I have not been visiting and commenting on blogs as much this week. I am trying to sneak in a few every now and then.
On a related note: I miss having some much time to play with my blog. That was an unexpected benefit of my sabbatical.
Thanks to Brenda for hosting Pondering. This week's theme is:
Do you love yourself?
This is an important question. One of the keys to happiness in life is to feel love and respected by others however, I believe that in order for that to happen, one must love and respect themselves first. I am not talking about arrogance or bravado but people who genuinely give off an aura of self confidence are very attractive to others. So how does one get to that point? I call it the mirror test.
The mirror test is really simple, I look in the mirror each day and ask myself a few simple questions. Were my actions yesterday respectful towards myself? Did I act in an honorable way towards others. Did I demonstrate a caring and compassionate manner? Was I empathetic towards others? Is the world a slightly better place as a result of my actions yesterday? Then I ask myself; Did I do anything yesterday to improve myself? Did I try to become a better dad? Did I work on becoming a better husband? Did I explore new ideas? Did I try to become wiser? Have I done anything to create the possibility that I could make an ever greater contribution to the world tomorrow?
I have found that the mirror test pushes me to keep moving forward. I know when the person staring back from the glass is not being truthful - one cannot and should not try to hide from themselves - if they want to truly want to be a person worth loving. I have found in my life that if I feel like I am genuinely trying to be a good person who is trying to be the best that I can be, I can walk around with my head held high. My confidence increases and my thoughts become clearer. This creates a positive environment that others are who are also positive are attracted to. Those people then become willing to help and work with me to keep moving forward. This creates a self-perpetuating loop where my work to make others lives better results in my life becoming happy and fulfilling one as a result. It creates the ultimate win-win situation but it has to start with truly loving oneself.
From my perspective as a tourism professor, I would like to add two trends to his list. The first is the continuing sophistication of the festival and event industries. Festivals and events are starting to introduce revenue management strategies. One only has to look at the number of sports teams that are introducing premium priced games or festivals that are charging higher rates in an effort to maximize revenues during high demand periods. Further, the marketing strategies employed by the festival and events industry is becoming increasingly sophisticated as those in the industry become more comfortable with the online world This is especially true in that the festival and events industry are catching up with hotel and airline industries in relation to distribution and ticket sales technology.
The second trend I wanted to add could be viewed as rather unfortunate. Three years ago the word 'green' was coming out of everyone's mouth. In the past year, that word and the philosophy that goes with it, has seemed to have lost momentum within the industry. Customers just did not demand 'green' products in the way that many predicted, so businesses have quietly let the trend go away. This was in part due to the recession causing the market to become more price sensitive but the intrinsic desire towards this movement has also seemed to lose steam.
I have told you my trends, now tell me what you saw as the top travel and tourism trend last year, I'd love to hear from you.

1. Lake Superior University has once again published a list of words/phrases they think should be banished from the Queen's English...here's the list for 2013- fiscal cliff, kick the can down the road, double down, job creators/creation, passion/passionate, yolo (acronym for you only live once), spoiler alert, bucket list, trending, superfood, boneless wings, and guru
Which of these words would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Go here to read more about how the words were chosen.
I am not a big fan of 'spoiler alert.' It is overused...
2. When was the last time you rode a train? Where did you go?
When I was in Europe in the fall. I took the train from Switzerland to Germany. It was a beautiful trip.
3. Bagels-yay or nay? Favorite 'flavor'? Favorite topping?
I like bacon and egg on a bagel.
4. 'Tis the season of awards shows....if you could star in a movie already made, which one would you choose?
South Pacific - only if it is shot on location and I do not have to sing.
5. The move towards single gender classroom has been making the news in recent months...what say you? Do you think kids perform better if separated by gender and are taught differently or is that discrimination? If you're a parent is this something you'd support in regard to your own children?
Honestly, one has to learn to work with the other gender, people of other races as well as religious preferences. It is better that they learn the skill in school than when they leave it to go into the workforce. I am not a big believer in school segregation.
6. What's your favorite thing about staying in a hotel?
I am a hospitality professor. I love studying the operational patterns of hotel employees. I also like watching how guests interact with the facility. Heather hates staying at a hotel with me because she has to deal with the critique after we leave. P.S. Tomorrow I am posting about hotel taxes and where they go on the blog. Come back and check it out.
7. Do you have a 'word' for 2013? What's the story behind your choice?
Fulfillment. It is the same word I use every year. I try to live my life so that I work to achieve goals and objectives. I live to grow and develop so that I may make a positive contribution to everyone around me.
8. Insert your own random thought here.
There has been a lot of chat among the professors this week about student cheating. If a student downloads questions from a test bank and uses them to study; are they really cheating? For me, if the professor is using a test bank, they have to expect that the student can download the questions in this day and age.
Thanks to Josie for hosting Two Shoes Tuesday. I strongly encourage you to read Heather's post this week. It is inspired and vastly superior to my weak effort here. This weeks theme is:
Aware
There is no better song about awareness of the world around them then...
I Can See Clearly Now
Johnny Nash
I can see clearly now the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me down
It's gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
It's gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
Oh yes I can make it now the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is that rainbow I've been praying for
It's gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
Look all around there's nothing but blue skies
Look straight ahead there's nothing but blue skies
I can see clearly now the rain is gone
I can see all obstacles in my way
Here is that rainbow I've been praying for
It's gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
It's gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
Bri-ri-ri-ri-right
Bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
Oh yeah
It's gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
It's gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day
It's gonna be a bright bright bright bright sun shiny day.
